What is a Doula?

The word “doula” comes from the ancient Greek and is now used to refer to someone experienced in childbirth.

A Birth Doula is someone who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to the mother and her partner before, during and just after childbirth.

  • Assists the birthing mama & her partner in preparing for and carrying out the her plans for the birth.
  • Provides emotional reassurance, perspective and physical support continuously throughout labor.
  • Utilizes comfort measures, position changes and other techniques to assist in labor progression
  • Helps parents make informed decisions.
  • Allows the woman’s partner to participate at a level in which he/she is comfortable.

Studies have shown that when doulas attend births, labors are shorter with fewer complications, babies are healthier and they breastfeed more easily.

A Postpartum Doula is someone who provides emotional and practical support during the postpartum period.

As your Postpartum Doula, Olympia:

  • Offers education, quiet nonjudgmental support, and companionship during the postpartum 4th trimester and beyond.
  • Assists with newborn care, family adjustment, meal preparation and light household tidying.
  • Offers evidence-based information on infant-feeding, emotional and physical recovery from childbirth utilizing her training in healing modalities and exercise systems, infant soothing, and coping skills for new parents; and makes appropriate referrals when necessary.

Research evidence shows that the quality services of a postpartum doula can ease the transition that comes with the addition of a baby to the family, improve parental satisfaction, and reduce the risk of mood disorders.
